A Laois County Councillor has called for improvement works to be carried out on a footpath in the village of Clough.
Fine Gael Councillor Conor Bergin put down the motion at a meeting of the Borris-In-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal this morning.
The footpath in question is adjacent to St Canice’s Church and pictures below show how it is badly damaged.
Cllr Bergin said: “The village of Clough looks super, it really is thriving.
“Mary’s Bar is vibrant and there is a new GAA pitch. It is a credit to everyone involved.
“But one section which needs attention is that footpath. People use it to walk up to the church.”
Engineer Edmond Kenny agreed to meet Cllr Bergin at the location to inspect what repairs were needed.
In a separate motion, Cllr Bergin asked that the Council address safety issues on the L-1517 at Ballymeelish between Green Roads, Ballybrophy and Killadooley National School.
Cllr Bergin said: “This is a very busy road. We have a creche up there plus the school which are doing really well.
“But parents have been on to me over crashes and near misses that have occurred at the sharp bends.
“Road markings, signage and getting people to reduce their speeds would all help.
“I have also asked for this to be placed on the salting route as it is absolutely lethal when there is ice or frost.”
Once again, engineer Edmond Kenny said he would meet Cllr Bergin and see what could be done at the location.
Finally, Cllr Bergin asked that the Council erect green safety bollards to improve visibility at the junction of the L-1635 and R434 at Springfield, Clough.
Upon confirmation that this would be done, Cllr Bergin welcomed that response.
He said: “This is a simple solution but it will make a massive difference.
“It will define the junction and light the whole thing up at night.”
