2023 Remembered: The Nobody Zone – New RTÉ docuseries on Laois serial killer, Kieran Patrick Kelly

Back in November RTE released a documentary on the Laois serial Killer , Kieran Patrick Kelly.

In a forgotten London underworld, a homeless Irishman kills multiple times without detection, unseen in a world where nobody seems to care.”

In 1983 Kieran Patrick Kelly, from Rathdowney confessed to multiple murders.

The shocking story has been turned into a docuseries and will air on RTÉ One from next week.

The Nobody Zone is based on the award-winning RTÉ podcast series of the same name.

The show blends the genres of documentary and drama to tell this unnerving and unexpected story.

Kelly was born in Rathdowney but spent the majority of his youth in Dublin, before joining the British army at 18.

He was dismissed in 1951, however, and just two years later he killed a man named Christie Smith.

Kelly was arrested eventually in London in 1983 and during his interview with police, confessed to a series of brutal murders going back 30 years.

He recounts his crimes and convinces the police that they are in the presence of Ireland most prolific and dangerous killer.

Irish actor Ned Dennehy, best known for his roles in Peaky Blinders, plays Kelly in the dramatisation.

Using Kieran Kelly’s own voice, Dennehy lip-synchs his performance, bringing to life the extraordinary scene of a serial killer’s horrific confessions.

The two-part series features interviews with police, a forensic psychologist, Kelly’s former employer, and Robert Mulhern, author of The Secret Serial Killer: The True Story of Kieran Kelly.

Documentary makers had access to an expert team of investigators and documentarians who have accumulated almost a decade of research on the Laois born killer.

‘The Nobody Zone– Interview with an Irish Serial Killer’ airs Monday, November 6, and November 13, at 9.35pm on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.
