In June, Laois man Shane Carney was appointed as Head of Athletic Performance with professional Welsh rugby club Llanelli Scarlets.

Laois man Shane Carney has been appointed as Head of Athletic Performance with professional Welsh rugby club Llanelli Scarlets.

The Emo native had been working with Ulster for the past couple of seasons and prior to that with Super League Rugby League side Hull Kingston Rovers.

Carney played football with Emo for many years and was on the team that played in the 2015 senior county final, when he travelled over and back from the UK to play. He initially moved to Leeds to study a Masters in Sports Science in 2011.

Scarlets are coached by former Wales and Lions scrum-half Dwane Peel, who worked alongside Carney, while a coach with Ulster.

Peel has also added former Ireland international Jared Payne to his backroom team as attack and backs coach.

South African world cup winner Albert van den Berg has been appointed as forward coach.

“Albert, Jared and Shane are exciting additions to our coaching team and we look forward to welcoming them to Parc y Scarlets this summer,” said Peel when announcing the news last week.

“I know Jared and Shane well from my time with Ulster. I worked with Jared for three and a half years and he is a quality coach who will be great for our talented crop of young players, in particular.

“Similarly, Shane, who is a highly-rated performance coach with a real focus on detail.”
