Brian Hogan has been confirmed as the first ever winner of the inaugural LaoisToday QuizCast competition.
He was crowned the champion after coming out the right side in the final against Murt Norton.
It was a nail biting final that went all the way to the last question where Brian’s knowledge on how many games the Republic of Ireland have won at major soccer tournaments was the difference.
As well as the significant honour of being the inaugural LaoisToday QuizCast champion, the winner also walked away with a very cool specially-assembled gift bag comprising a €150 SuperValu voucher, an annual membership to LaoisToday, a limited edition LaoisToday hat, selection of Ballykilcavan craft beers and vouchers for Supermacs and the Wandering Elk.
The beaten finalist got a similar prize – with a Kelly’s Steakhouse voucher instead of the SuperValu one – while the semi-finalists and other contestants got smaller goodie bags.
Over the last number of weeks, 16 Laois people put their sporting knowledge to the test in a range of bouts hosted over Zoom.
That allowed us to whittle things down to a final four and they competed in The Square Bar this evening.
The four to make it to this stage of the competition were Murt Norton from Clonad, Jack Scully from Portlaoise, Brian Hogan from Courtwood and Colin Delaney from Clonad.
The latter came through a playoff earlier this week after original qualifier Gavin Deering was forced to withdraw.
All four were joined by a group of supporters with our quizmaster Mark Comerford putting them through their paces in a format similar to what has been used in the Round of 16 and quarter-finals.
To add to the occasion, some of the beaten candidates from the earlier rounds returned to take part in ‘The Senior B’, as part of Team Alan or Team Steven.
Videographer Paul Dargan captured all of the action tonight on video and audio.
So the final night will be available to watch and listen back to in the coming days.
