The Third Level football and ladies football league competitions came to a conclusion this week with huge Laois involvement across the codes.
In the men’s game, Timahoe’s Oisin Ramsbottom was between the sticks as University of Limerick met University of Ulster in the Division 1 Freshers final.
The former Knockbeg College student, who is with the Laois U-20 footballers, emerged on the winning side.
The game went all the way to extra time with UL eventually winning out by 4-5 to 1-13.
In the Ladies game, there was a host of Laois involvement across a range of finals.
The Division 1 decider saw DCU come up against UCC where they proved far too strong with a 1-8 to 0-1 victory.
The side are managed by Ballyfin’s Stephen Duff and contain Arles-Kilcruise’s David Conway as part of the management team.
The Division 2 final was won by UCD on a scoreline of 2-8 to 0-12.
They got the better of Ulster University and contained Emo native Ciara Crowley, who plays for Portlaoise, in their ranks.
Timahoe’s Orla Hennessy contested the Division 3 final with ATU Sligo where they came up against DKIT.
Here, a late goal edged the contest in favour of the Dundalk side on a scoreline of 1-11 to 2-6.
In Division 4, SETU Waterford lost out to TUD by three points with three Laois players involved for Waterford.
Niamh Phelan from St Brigid’s was in midfield, Jane Madden of Shanahoe was corner forward while Michelle Byrne from St Conleth’s was corner back.
There was Laois involvement with both of the teams in the Division 6 final as Maynooth 2 faced DCU 6.
The game went all the way to extra time where Maynooth won with Issy Finlay of Shanahoe and Rachel Fitzgerald of Ballyroan on the winning side with Timahoe’s Sarah Tuohy and St Brigid’s Emma Hickey playing for DCU.
It was a special night in particular for Finlay as she captained her side to glory.
