Three Laois students were recognised for student contribution and academic excellence at the recent Carlow College, St. Patrick’s Conferring Ceremony for 2022.
Karen Wills from Portlaoise, Grainne Scott from Mountmellick and Colm Greene from Portlaoise each received graduation prizes for achievements during their studies at Carlow College.
Karen Wills graduated with a BA (Hons) in English & History was presented with the James Fintan Lalor Student of the Year Award in recognition for academic excellence and all-round contribution to the College.
Speaking of her time at Carlow College, Karen said: “The engagement you have with the lecturers, you won’t get anywhere else.
“This is massively important. Every lecturer will get to know you by name and they are so generous with their time. They want you to succeed.”
Since finishing her studies, Karen has commenced employment in the role of Learning Support with the Laois Offaly Education and Training Board at Mountmellick Further Education and Training Centre.
Colm Greene graduated with a BA in Arts & Humanities and received the Award for BA in Arts & Humanities which is awarded to the student who has achieved a Distinction and first place on the degree.
Likewise, Grainne Scott graduated with a BA (Hons) in Arts & Humanities and was award the Dr Anne Holton Award for Teaching Excellence.
Staff and students at Carlow College had a day of celebration for its Class of 2023 on Friday as 189 graduates – including 23 students from Laois – were conferred in the College’s graduation, which took place in Carlow Cathedral.
The College welcomed back alumni, Donnchadh O’Mahony of the Leaving Cert Guidance podcast and Aisling Burke, Residential Service Manager for Compass Child and Family Services to deliver the keynote addresses at the graduation.
Speaking of the ceremony, Dr Thomas McGrath, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Registrar of Carlow College said: “Today we congratulate our new graduates and celebrate their achievements so far.
“They are a credit to the College and I have no doubt they will go on to prosper in their chosen career paths”.
Carlow College President, Fr Conn Ó Maoldhomhnaigh warmly congratulated the graduates who come from 18 different counties across Ireland.
He said: “As College President, it is my pleasure and privilege to acknowledge the exceptional achievements of all of our graduates.
“They have been part of our journey over the past three to four years and we wish them the very best as they continue on their own individual paths.”, said Fr Ó Maoldhomhnaigh
