There is serious housing development ongoing in Stradbally at present with 122 new homes under various stages of construction.
Three sites are currently active across the town with ground broken on the most recent one recently.
This development is called Carraig Glas and is located adjacent to the playground and behind The Green.
It consists of 26 houses that are broken into two four-bedroom units, seven three-bedroom units, 10 two-bedroom units and seven one-bedroom units.
This will be delivered by Laois County Council working in partnership with CN Construction and Van Dijk Architects.
Laois County Council will own and manage the scheme with tenants nominated by Laois County Council from its housing waiting list.
The second development is taking place at the top of the town on a site behind The Grand Stand shop.
19 houses are being built here and they will be very similar to the award winning Court View estate which is located beside Dunnes Pub.
These homes will primarily be allocated to elderly people and people with disabilities.
While construction also continues at the biggest development – Oak Vale Meadows – which will have 77 houses when completed.
This estate is located beside St Colman’s NS on Church Avenue and the homes are split into three types.
31 of them are social housing, 13 are designated as ‘affordable’ and the remaining 33 are available on the private market.
The keys for 21 of these were handed out earlier this week with the first tenants set to move in immanently.
Fianna Fail Councillor Paschal McEvoy, who is the current Cathaoirleach of Laois County Council, welcomed all three developments.
He said: “In relation to Carraig Glas, these new homes are a key part of the Council’s programme for the delivery of over 534 new social homes in County Laois over the five year period to from 2022 to 2026.
“One of the main objectives of Housing For All is the creation of sustainable communities.
“This development and these homes will play a vital part in enhancing and sustaining the village community of Stradbally.
“This development will be delivered by Laois County Council working in partnership with CN Construction and Van Dijk Architects.
“Laois County Council will own and manage the scheme with tenants nominated by Laois County Council from its housing waiting list. Funding for this development was provided from Social Housing Investment Programme(SHIP) monies.
“The SHIP funding is capital support provided to Local Authorities under the Housing For All Programme to facilitate the funding of construction, acquisition or refurbishment of new social housing units.
“Work is continuing on the other two developments in Stradbally and is progressing really well.
“21 keys were handed out in Oak Vale Meadows recently and the majority of these went to local people who have been on the housing waiting list.
“So this is all very much a good news story for Stradbally and a good news story for Laois.”
