There is sadness in Portlaoise and in GAA plus rugby circles following the passing of Tom Scully.
Mr Scully, aged 82, passed away suddenly on Sunday following a short illness.
He is survived by his wife Brenda and children Brian, Kathryn, Philip and Tommy.
Cherished grandfather to Ryan, Faye, Charlie, Ruby and Sadie, Tom is deeply regretted by his loving family, brothers Pat and Kenny, sisters Noreen and Ann, son in law John, daughters in law Jackie, Gemma and Niamh, his special friend Joe Egan, nephews, nieces, former customers and many friends in Portlaoise Rugby Club and Portlaoise GAA Club.
A long term steward with Laois GAA, Tom was remembered with a minute’s silence before the U-20 football final on Sunday.
On social media, his club, Portlaoise GAA, paid him a heartfelt tribute.
They said: “We are very sorry to hear of the passing of a great town character. Tom ‘TA’ Scully – the fruit ‘n veg man.
“Tom was a proud member of the club, he was a former administrator, a mentor and a player.
“He was a jovial man who loved the craic and brought a smile to every face he met.
“He was 82 years of age and his passing was sudden. He lived life to the fullest, right to end.
“When he took ill a few days ago he was on his way to Bosco’s for his regular catch up with some great friends from the club, and some from outside the club.
“The slagging, and wind-ups, and plain good fun were cherished by him and the lads involved.
“In relation to the club he was an administrator for a number of years, holding the position of county delegate amongst other things.
“There is a great photo with this piece which was a very proud moment for the Scully clan.
“Tom was a selector as the Town won the Junior A football championship in 2005 – and his three sons Brian, Philip, and Tommy were all playing on that team.
“The three lads are currently immersed in the club and are real stalwarts – this is something that gave Tom himself a lot of pride.
“Tom supplied fruit to various teams in the club over the years, as he did also with Laois GAA. He was also a mentor with Laois GAA.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Tom’s wife Brenda and all of the Scully family. May Tom Rest in Eternal Peace.”
Tom will be reposing at Keegan’s Funeral Home, Portlaoise, on Monday evening from 5.30pm until 8pm, with rosary at 7.30pm.
His removal will take place on Tuesday to SS Peter and Paul’s Church, to arrive for 12 noon requiem Mass.
Interment will follow in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery.
May Tom Rest in Peace.
