First-year students at Portlaoise College commemorated Geography Week recently, showcasing their work in the subject.
From first year onwards, students are encouraged to study geography as an exploratory subject, where they ask questions and form their own opinions, in conjunction with individual research.
It is in this way students can take ownership of the learning process.
As part of their assigned Week 10 Examinations, students were tasked with compiling research on a topic of their choice.
They presented this in the form of a physical model, an informative presentation on their tablets, or any other manner that promoted active learning.
The philosophy behind this is to allow students to build their own understanding of a particular topic in a practical manner.
This is a stepping stone on the pathway to active, student-led learning which prepares pupils for upcoming assessments.
Students will undertake a classroom-based assessment in second year – Geography in the News – whichinvolves individual or group – based research on a geographical event that has featured in the media.
As seen in the photos, the proud students showcased an impressive array of projects, ranging from physical models, to interactive PowerPoint slides which students can use as a revision tool.
It was an invaluable experience for all students.
