Gardai asked to be vigilant over ‘aggressive begging’ in Portlaoise in the run up to Christmas

Gardai in Laois have been asked to make sure that elderly and vulnerable people are not put under pressure due to ‘aggressive begging’ ahead of Christmas.

Sinn Fein Councillor Caroline Dwane-Stanley said that the Lyster Square area of Portlaoise is particularly susceptible for this.

She fears that elderly people who are collecting their pension may be put in difficult positions.

She said: “I want to raise the issue of begging in Lyster Square – particularly near the Post Office.

“I don’t want elderly people feeling under pressure or being followed.

“I have nothing against anyone holding a cup but we need to be vigilant and ensure that people are not being coerced.”

Separately, Fianna Fail Councillor Catherine Fitzgerald asked if there was any update on the proposed new courthouse.

She said: “The situation down there when the court is sitting is getting worse and worse.

“Who can give us an update on this? Is it the Office of Public Works? If so, we need to send them a letter.”

It was agreed that a letter seeking an update be sent on behalf of the Committee.
