A Laois American Football team has tasted success at a national championships held in Dublin recently.
The Laois Labs Flag American Football Team secured an impressive victory at the 2023 Glas Bowl Championship, held at the Sport Ireland Campus.
The Glas Bowl is the All-Ireland First Division Flag Football Championship and Flag Football is a variation of the game using ‘flags’ instead of tackling. It is a similar concept to tag rugby.
With an outstanding record during the season, Laois Labs faced a formidable challenge from the Cork City Outlaws, in a tightly contested game that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
In the championship showdown, the Laois Labs faced off against the North Down Dragons, a fellow newly-formed team in their debut season.
The match brought immense excitement to the league, as both newly established teams advanced to the finals in their inaugural year.
In a thrilling performance, the Laois Labs emerged victorious, securing the title of 2023 Glas Bowl Champions.
Laois Labs became the first ever debuting team to win the Glas Bowl.
This triumph propels the Laois Labs into the premier division, signifying their extraordinary achievement and dedication to the sport.
The entire team is elated with their exceptional performance and eagerly anticipates another thrilling season of flag American football in the coming year.
In addition to their championship win, the Laois Labs were nominated for the Laois Community & Voluntary Awards.
Four of their members represented the team at the awards ceremony on Friday, November 3, demonstrating the team’s commitment to the local community.
Furthermore, the Laois Labs invite all sports enthusiasts and community members to their Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Thursday, December 7, at 6pm in the Portlaoise
Library.
This open event is an opportunity to meet the team and learn about their exciting plans for the future.
