Killenard 3-15 Mountmellick 2-6
Division 1 Boys Shield
An excellent display of shooting saw Killenard defeat Mountmellick in the Division 1 Shield final this afternoon.
Oliver Hughes, Cian Twomey, Jack Turley and Dara Donoher all shone for the winners.
Mountmellick played their part too but when a side scores 15 points in Cumann na mBunscol, you rarely lose.
The opening score of the contest went the way of Killenard as Oliver Hughes took on the Mountmellick defence before unleashing a powerful effort which flew past Conor Bourke in the Mountmellick net.
Edward Feehan knocked over the game’s first point.
Killenard were attacking in numbers and they made it worthwhile as they fired over five more points unanswered to give themselves a healthy 1-6 to no score advantage. Jack Turley and Dara Donoher both raised two white flags with Hughes adding a point to his earlier goal.
Mountmellick almost opened their account for the game as Ruairi Dunne’s shot rattled off the upright and was cleared to safety.
Dunne made no mistake with the next chance he got as he split the posts for his side’s first score. Mohammad Chama added another point to Mountmellick’s tally with a free.
Cian Twomey and Feehan ended the half with a point each as Killenard held a healthy 1-8 to 0-2 lead at the break.
Just like the first-half, the opening score of the second period was a goal as Turley rifled the ball into the back of the net to take his individual tally to 1-2.
Bourke was then called into action in the Mountmellick net as he saved from close-range. Twomey knocked over another two scores for his side.
Jason Behan (free) and Twomey traded points while Hughes kicked over his second point. Dunne replied with a free for Mountmellick before Hughes pointed yet again.
The next piece of action saw Killenard get their third goal with Donoher raising a green flag.
Twomey raised his fifth white flag before Dunne got Mountmellick’s first goal.
Thomas McGrath pointed having come on as a substitute with Mountmellick’s Harry Minahan firing past Eoin Loftus for his side’s second goal.
The final piece of action saw Hughes raise a white flag as Killenard ran out worthy winners in the end.
