The many guises of road safety were high on the agenda during the November meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal District.

Councillor Paddy Bracken has called on Laois County Council to replace the broken flashing beacons at Derrylamogue National School.

The Fianna Fáil Cllr said the school urgently needs this taken care of as the dark winter months are coming in.

Mr. Paul McLoughlin, Senior Engineer said “Laois County Council Road Design section will arrange for the replacement of the flashing warning signs as requested.”

Cllr Bracken also called on the Council carry out traffic calming measures to control the speed at Ballyfin Community Centre.

The motion gained the full support of party colleague, Cllr Seamus McDonald and Independent Cllr James Kelly.

Mr McLoughlin said “Laois County Council Road Design section will assess the current traffic speeds at this location and thereafter considered measures as necessary.”

Cllr Bracken’s final motion of the day was to urge the Council to re-locate the current disabled parking bay at St. Joseph’s Church, Mountmellick “to make it more user friendly.”

Mr. Edmond Kenny, District Engineer said: “The relocation of the disabled parking bay is approved.

“Works to the footpath to facilitate vulnerable road users will be undertaken in the coming weeks.”
