Laois County Council has been put under pressure to deliver on funding “that was approved some years ago” for major road works at Middlemount, Rathdowney.
Fine Gael Cllr John King called on the Council to provide an update at the November meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal District.
“This particular stretch of road has taken the lives of young people from the area,” Cllr King said.
“This request for works is a matter of serious urgency before more fatalities occur.”
The motion was heavily supported by Independent Cllrs James Kelly and Ollie Clooney.
Mr Paul McLoughlin, Senior Engineer said: “Laois County will prepare and submit a Specific Improvement Grant application to the Department of Transport for works at Middlemount, Rathdowney.”
Cllr King also called on the Council to re-surface the road in Errill village and also repair damaged footpaths outside disused post office.
Mr Edmond Kenny, District Engineer said:
“The Village of Errill will be resurfaced as part of the current 3 roadworks multi-annual year programme.
“Staff from Laois County Council will inspect the damaged footpaths.”
Cllr King’s final motion of the day was to ask the Council to carry out drainage works under road at Ballybrophy, Borris-in-Ossory to stop flooding occurring at the newly developed glamping site that was opened this year.
Mr Kenny said that trial holes are scheduled to be excavated at the site to identify services which may conflict with the replacement of the existing culvert.”
