Portlaoise College’s annual summer language scholarships were launched by Principal Noel Daly alongside Ms Alex Longiewko, Head of French, Ms Elma Phelan, Head of Gaeilge and Ms Mary Mulvihill head of German.
The school is offering approximately €6,000 in funding for students to attend language summer school programmes aimed at fostering linguistic excellence at the school.
At the launch, Principal Noel Daly said: “At Portlaoise College, education is not confined to the walls of the classroom.
“It extends far beyond that and attending language school enables our students to embrace diverse experiences, broaden their horizons and embrace cultural diversity.
“Awarding language scholarships does more than provide financial support.
“It allows our students to become immersed in the language which will enrich their lives and give them unforgettable experiences as well as assist them academically.”
This sentiment was echoed by last year’s German recipient, Jannet Cierocka who added that the “ELC helped (her) take higher Level German for the Leaving Cert”.
Some previous recipients spoke of the impact that the scholarship award had on them.
Aoibheann O’Sullivan, a recipient of the Gaeltacht scholarship said: “I made friends from all over Ireland all whilst improving my Irish language skills and having the experience of a lifetime.”
Grace Quinn, who attended ELC French Language school said: “Studying French with Euro Languages College was a truly unforgettable experience.
“I was completely immersed in the French language for a period of three weeks, so my confidence and fluency improved greatly and I made friends for life.”
Students who wish to apply for the scholarships can do so via the QR code that will be available on the school’s Facebook page and on posters in the school as well as through their Language Google Classroom.
