Here at LaoisToday – we love a good quiz! We ran them on Facebook Live during lockdown and they were well received by our audience.
That got us thinking about developing things further – and the LaoisToday QuizCast, sponsored by the Square Bar, was born.
With our own Mark Comerford as quiz master, 16 Laois people have been chosen to battle it out to take the coveted crown.
The opening bout sees contestants answer a series of questions from rounds including: Golden Goose, ‘Hon Laois, Reeling in the Years and Numbers.
After that 16, will be whittled down to a last eight with the final four advancing to the live semi finals.
The Round of 16 and quarter finals will all be recorded over Zoom and broadcast on YouTube, Facebook video and across our Podcast platforms.
The semi finals and final will be live events held in The Square Bar in Portlaoise on Friday, December 8.
As for the contestants, they hail from various parts of Laois and are all well known in sporting circles.
Camross referee Eoin Scully takes on our own Steven Miller while Alan Hartnett is up against Timahoe’s Pauric Ramsbottom – he lifted the Minor A football championship for Stradbally Parish Gaels this year. He is also a freelance reporter for LaoisToday.
There will be local rivalry when Portarlington’s Darren Bracken and Courtwood’s Brian Hogan meet while Laois Ladies duo Mo Nerney and Eimear Barry are another of the Round 1 games.
There is an all-Clonad round as Murt Norton takes on Colin Delaney while Castletown’s Barry McEvoy is up against Mountrath’s Michael ‘Beag’ Boyhan.
Can Killeshin finally get one over Graiguecullen? Gavin Deering will be hoping to do that when he faces Laois footballer Mark Timmons.
And Mountmellick’s Bernard Rochford will be up against Portlaoise Panthers guru Jack Scully.
The first episode will be availbe to watch on Facebook and YouTube this Tuesday evening with three more Round 1 contests broadcast across this week and the remaining four on next week.
