Annanough GAA’s eventful and enjoyable season came to an end on Saturday when they went down to Louth champions Glyde Rangers in the quarter-final of the Leinster junior club football championship.
After winning the Laois JFC ‘A’ title three weeks ago by beating The Harps in O’Moore Park, they followed it up with a win over Carlow side St Mullins in the first round of the Leinster championship.
Sadly, their campaign was ended on Saturday after an epic extra-time battle with the Louth side.
The club have gathered huge support from the local Vicarstown community in recent weeks with the excitement of a county final win and run in Leinster providing a huge boost to their members, young and old.
And they are particularly grateful for the sponsorship and contributions from local businesses and individuals.
Hennessy Auctioneers, Horgan Financial Services, Gaynor Miller and LaoisToday have all provided sponsorship this year while a significant sum was also raised by supporters as part of a County Final Fundraising drive.
The players have been well kitted out with zip tops, polo shirts, t-shirts and training tops given to everyone involved.
“We’re very thankful to everyone who has supported us this year,” says chairman Cyril Darcy.
“We have had a huge response to our County Board draw, club lotto and the recent county final fund. Plus we’d like to thank everyone who helped us parking cars at the National Ploughing Championships.
“We are so proud of our players. They have put in a huge effort under manager Paul Lawlor this year and there is a great atmosphere in the club at the moment. Long may it continue.”
Indeed the weekend that Annanough won the Laois JFC ‘A’ final, the Stradbally Parish Gaels minor team won their championship for the first time in 17 years. There were six Annanough players part of that panel as well as team mentors John Deegan and Cyril Darcy.
The club are also delighted to have been recently officially recognised by the GAA as a Healthy Club with huge work done by Lorraine Coady and Vicky Flynn to achieve that status.
