Laois County Council have been urged to carry out a survey for Main Street, Rathdowney to design proper parking and set down areas for the town.
Cllr John King made the call at the Borris-in-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal District meeting this week, with the motion receiving wide support from fellow Cllrs.
“The purpose of this survey is to allow free flow of traffic through the town and should be carried out as a matter of urgency before a serious accident occurs,” Cllr King said.
The Fine Gael Cllr said proper parking and set down areas would increase shopping in the town, and also keep the footpaths free from cars to allow pedestrians and wheelchair users to move freely without obstruction.
Cllr King pressed the importance of consultation with local shopkeepers and business owners, and stated: “We want people shopping in Rathdowney.”
Cllrs James Kelly, Ollie Clooney and Conor Bergin supported the motion, with Cllr Bergin adding that he welcomed the new businesses starting in the town while Cllr Kelly backed up the importance of consultation with local businesses.
Ms Denise Rainey, Town Regeneration Officer said: “Laois County Council have engaged Consultant Engineers to prepare a preliminary design in respect of Main Street, Rathdowney.
“The design will focus on providing improved facilities for pedestrians and dedicated short-term parking for businesses, whilst also improving the safe flow of traffic.”
Cllr King also tabled a motion that the Council install post and rail fencing at Dorothy’s cross Rathdowney to coincide with new footpaths and fencing in the area.
Mr Edmond Kenny, District Engineer said: “Fencing works will be completed as part of the active travel measures to improve safety at the junction for pedestrians.”
