It was confirmed this week that Laois County Council has secured a lease on a property comprising 162 square metres at The Heritage Centre, Timahoe.
The building in question is the old Church of Ireland in the village, which has been in the ownership of the Council for a number of years.
The lease is for a period of 4 years and 11 months to Tigh Mochua Cheile Committee, the Pink House, Timahoe.
The news was warmly welcomed by local Councillors, with several praising the move as progress for rural towns and villages.
Cathaoirleach Pashacl McEvoy described the building as “a great asset.”
“This is a win-win for everyone,” he said.
“There’s an awful lot of money after being spent on it in recent times.
“It’s a fabulous building, right beside the Round Tower and is used for a lot of different things.
“There is a fabulous committee there, so it’s in safe hands.”
Cllr Padraig Fleming hailed the good news, with Cllr PJ Kelly noting that projects such as this are crucial in keeping small villages alive.
