The halls of Portarlington Further Education and Training Centre were alive with the sound of music on Friday morning as part of the LOETB’s Intercultural week.
The Laois-Offaly Education and Training Board had a week-long celebration of the vast range of cultures and nationalities – and a lovely event took place in Portarlington on Friday under the guidance of centre manager Margaret Morrin.
It was a morning of traditional music and dancing – with the Portarlington Ukrainian choir, young local Irish dancers and a teenage Ukrainian violinist all impressing the crowd gathered.
16-year-old Babych Mykhailo was particularly impressive on the violin. He was accompanied on the day by his proud parents Natalia and Yurii as well as his 14-year-old sister Liliia.
He told us his family had fled Ukraine four months ago, driving across Europe and seeking refuge in Ireland. They initially stayed in Athlone before moving to Portarlington in recent times.
His older brother, aged 21, wasn’t permitted to move as he was over 18 and remains in university in Ukraine.
“We’re so grateful for everyone for the performances put on today,” said centre manager Margaret Morrin afterwards.
“It was lovely to share the traditional Irish dancing and Ukrainian music.”
The young Irish dancers were Ellie Mae and Leah O’Connor from the Buggie School of Irish Dance.
Also among the attendance were students from Poland, Syria, Russia, Nigeria and the Philippines.
