It is a massive weekend for everyone in Abbeyleix and it has gotten off to the best possible start.
Abbeyleix have just been named Ireland’s Tidiest Town and the Tidy Towns 2023 awards.
Abbeyleix beat off competition from 886 other towns and villages to claim the title, which was announced at a ceremony in Croke Park in Dublin.
This is the 65th year of the national Tidy Towns award.
Abbeyleix also claimed the award for Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town.
The other big winners and finalists were Geashill, just over the border in Offaly, which claimed the award for Ireland’s Tidiest Village.
Killarney, Kerry, received the award for Ireland’s Tidiest Large Town and Ballincollig, Co Cork was declared Ireland’s Tidiest Large Urban Centre.
Abbeyleix are set to descend on O’Moore Park on Sunday for the hurling finals.
Their Seniors and Minors will be bidding for championship glory – and this is the perfect start to what could be a magical weekend.
