Over quarter of a million euro has been designated for the funding of Laois Sports Partnership projects.
The €262,000 grant comes as part of the Government’s Dormant Accounts Fund.
The funding will be geared towards projects that will assist and increase the number of those participating in sport, especially those with a disability and girls in sport.
St. Mary’s Hall, Portlaoise, will be one such project receiving funding for works on the building.
Of the €262,000, funding has been allocated to:
- Community Sports and Activity Hubs – €122,500
- Youth Leadership Programmes – €15,000
- Volunteers supports – €15,000
- Sports Inclusion Disability Projects – €30,500
- Innovation for Sports Inclusion – €40,000
- Urban Outdoor Adventure Initiatives – €25,000
- Her Moves Programme – €14,000
Laois TD, Sean Fleming, Minister for Foreign Affairs, welcomed the news, saying:
“This funding will be invested in a wide range of excellent sports projects in Laois that were submitted for funding by Laois Sports Partnership.
“I want to compliment Laois Sports Partnership for the use of some of the 2022 funding to develop facilities in conjunction with the Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) at St Fintan’s Campus, Portlaoise.
“These facilities enable more accessibility for wheelchair-users to take part in sports.
“It was great to see so many people using the new sports equipment when I visited the Irish Wheelchair Association on Monday.”
