Laois Comhairle na nÓg are giving young people a voice through their new podcast, which will focus on discrimination.
Comhairle na nÓg (CNN) are child and youth councils in the 31 local authorities of the country.
These councils give children and young people the opportunity to be involved in the development of local services and policies.
CNN is for young people under the age of 18, who have no other voting mechanism to have their voice heard.
It is designed to enable young people to have a voice on the services, policies and issues that affect them in their local area.
On Saturday, October 14, Laois CNN will release a podcast on three types of discrimination, and how they can, and do, affect young people.
At the last Youth Conference AGM, a vote was held to decide CNN’s topic of discussion for this year, and the young people of Laois decided that the focus would be on discrimination.
It was decided that as discrimination is such a broad issue, there would not be capacity to cover it effectively and thoroughly.
Therefor, the topic of discussion will focus on three particular types of discrimination – disability; race/ethnicity; and social class.
Laois CNN decided that they should release a podcast to raise awareness, which will be easy for anyone to access, and target the young people of Laois.
The podcast is a careful blend of humour, and sombreness, with some deeply moving personal stories and accounts.
Speaking about the podcast, Laois CNN Chairperson, Ava Foley said:
“Over the course of our podcast, we explore our chosen topics of discrimination, listen to our very own CNN members telling their stories, and it will even feature some special guests, giving personal accounts of their experiences with discrimination.
“The young people of Laois spoke, and we listened. We would really appreciate it if you could listen too.
“On behalf of Laois CNN team, we say go raibh maith agat, agus slain go bfhoill, to all involved in creating the podcast.”
