A local County Councillor has called for improvements to some of Laois’s most popular tourist attractions.
Cllr Seamus McDonald called on Laois County Council to erect new signs and seating at strategic areas of nature tourism, specifically Fanning Pass, Ard Eireann, Glendarragh, and The Wolfe Trap.
The Fianna Fáil Cllr was speaking at the Borris-in-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal District meeting last week.
Cllr McDonald remarked that “tourism is flying these days – it’s great for the county,” insisting that constant improvements were a necessary and worthwhile investment.
Mr Paul McLoughlin, Senior Engineer for Roads said: “The Roads section will examine the opportunity to provide signs and seating at the requested locations.”
Cllr McDonald also called on the Council to install traffic calming measures, in the form of traffic lightsat Shelly’s Corner in Rosenallis.
This motion received strong support from fellow Cllrs, Paddy Bracken, James Kelly, and John King who said: “there is no room for error at that corner.”
Mr James Dowling, Senior Executive Engineer at the Road Design Office said:
“Laois County Council Road Design Department will review the recorded collision data for this location, and thereafter investigate suitable traffic calming measures as required.
