A local County Councillor has expressed his disappointment at Laois County Council’s response to his request for public lighting.
Cllr Conor Bergin was speaking at the Borris-in-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal District meeting this week.
The Fine Gael Cllr had called on the Council to address the lack of public lighting on the L-5070 at Coolrain crossroads.
Mr James Dowling, Senior Executive Engineer at the Road Design Office responded, saying:
“This location is outside of the speed limit in a rural location and does not based on this criteria necessitate the installation of a public light.”
Cllr Bergin tabled a further two motions, first calling on the Council address the speeding issues on the R434 at Springfield, Clough as a matter of urgency.
Mr Dowling said “Laois County Council Road Design will carry out a speed survey at this location.
“Following the results of the survey they will investigate the need for intervention measures in light of the Department of Transports recently announced proposal to reduce the default speed limits on secondary, urban and rural roads.”
Finally, Cllr Bergin asked that the Council address the drainage and road safety issues at the junction of the R440 and Rossalee Lane, Mountrath.
Mr Edmond Kenny, District Engineer said: “A meeting will be arranged with (Cllr Bergin) at this location to establish the issues of concern and identify remedial works.”
