PortDara Falcons are once again hosting the the Leinster Women’s Tens Rugby Tournament, this Saturday, September 9.
The inaugural tournament last summer was hosted and organised by PortDara, with the club once again taking the reins this year.
Portarlington Rugby Club was the original venue but the 2023 iteration will be held in PortDara’s second home ground, Cill Dara Rugby Club.
There was a real festival atmosphere last year and the same is expected this weekend, with music, barbecue, spot prizes and more supplementing the rugby on the field.
The festivities will run from from 10am to 5pm.
The ten-a-side format is similar to sevens rugby, which has been gaining popularity here in Ireland with the continued and growing success of both the men’s and women’s teams.
Sevens rugby rose to prominence with its inclusion in the 2016 Olympic Games, but has been a vital part of growing rugby in smaller nations for decades.
Aside from the additional players, the main difference between tens and sevens is that tens rugby incorporates scrums and line-outs.
This gives players a competitive platform to hone their skills in the more technical aspects of the sport.
This year will see teams from around Leinster descending on Cill Dara to compete in pool and knockout games, with a cup and plate on the line.
PortDara Falcons will be joined by the likes of Greystones, Kilkenny, Mullingar and New Ross.
Kilkenny were the 2023 champions, beating PortDara in the final of the cup, while New Ross overcame Greystones in the plate final.
