A three-year-old girl died following an accident in Laois this week.

The girl was taken to Portlaoise Hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Electric Picnic festival promoter Melvin Benn says that the decision to stage the 2024 event earlier next year has nothing to do with Coldplay performing in Croke Park.

Last week, Electric Picnic fans were surprised as tickets for the 2024 festival were released earlier than ever before – and with a new date.

The 2024 event is set to take place from August 16-18 and until now, no explanation for this move had been offered.

The fine weather and festival atmosphere saw some 150 older residents tour the Electric Picnic grounds with the help of the Residents’ Committee and Age Friendly Laois.

Former All-Ireland winning Dublin footballer Ger Brennan has become the latest name to be linked with the vacant Laois manager’s job.

LaoisToday understand that the St Vincent’s clubman has applied and is scheduled to be interviewed for the position shortly.

A qualified school teacher, Brennan has worked as a Gaelic Games Executive at University College Dublin since 2015.

7 – Laois student chosen for prestigious programme to study in Italy for the next two years

United World Colleges (UWC) has chosen a second level student from Portlaoise to receive a scholarship and travel abroad to Europe to pursue the esteemed International Baccalaureate (IB) programme from 2023 – 2025.

Luke Carroll (16) from, Ballyfin, Portlaoise, previously attended Mountrath Community School and will attend UWC Adriatic in Italy.

8 – Fantastic results as 134 students from Heywood Community School complete Leaving Cert

It was all smiles in Heywood Community School today as 134 students who sat their Leaving Cert last June received their results.

While all were happy, several achieved more than 500 points and some even breached the 600 mark.

It was a record breaking day for Portlaoise College as the Leaving Cert results for 2023 were confirmed.

The school was awash with smiles, hugs and delight etched across the faces of the students at Portlaoise College.

Despite receiving their results online, a large number of the college’s Leaving Cert and LCA students chose to come to the school to share their excitement with parents, staff and friends.

There were plenty of smiling faces in Portlaoise CBS as the lads received their Leaving Cert results.

Many students are going on to study law, computer science courses, biomedical science, accounting, business, primary school teaching, PE teaching and agricultural science.
