Introducing MJ Tierney – but not as you have ever seen him before.
The 36-year-old, who won All-Ireland and Leinster medals with Laois, is now a singer-songwriter and has released a brand new track.
The Ballyroan man won an All-Ireland Minor medal in 2003 as well as two Leinster U-21 medals in 2006 and 2007.
He was also part of the Laois team which claimed Leinster glory in 2004.
The Ballyroan-Abbey forward also has a Laois Senior Championship medal and was named Footballer of the Year as they claimed the 2006 championship under the banner of Ballyroan Gaels.
The former Laois senior footballer has now transitioned his passion and creativity into the world of music.
Drawing influence from iconic Irish artists such as Luke Kelly, Glen Hansard, Mundy, and Dermot Kennedy, MJ unveils his debut single, ‘Salt on the Rim,’ a stirring track that navigates the depths of grief and the transformative power of acceptance.
His folk sound evokes a sense of nostalgia and vulnerability that is captivating and relatable.
“This is a very special track for me, one that I’m hugely proud of,” MJ said.
“Salt on the Rim is a song that I wrote after losing one of my best friends. It’s a personal heartfelt exploration of grief and the power of embracing your emotions.”
MJ’s music journey began in bands in the early days but was put on hold during his years playing football with Laois.
The pandemic reignited his passion and kickstarted his solo project which began during lockdown in 2021.
‘Salt on the Rim’ is a poetic and emotionally charged composition that elegantly unfolds in three distinct parts, mirroring the stages of grief.
The song begins with a reflective tone, capturing the rawness of sorrow that accompanies loss.
As the melody progresses, listeners are taken into a space of remembrance and celebration, allowing fond memories and joyful moments to permeate.
However, just as the shadows start to lift, the heart-wrenching reality of absence resurfaces, reminding us that grief is a journey with twists and turns.
The third verse of the song marks a profound shift towards understanding, acceptance, and gratitude.
Salt on the Rim captures the bittersweet realization that the dreams and aspirations shared with a loved one are realized through the time spent together.
Salt on the Rim is now available to stream on all major platforms.
