Electric Picnic festival promoter Melvin Benn says that the decision to stage the 2024 event earlier next year has nothing to do with Coldplay performing in Croke Park.
Last week, Electric Picnic fans were surprised as tickets for the 2024 festival were released earlier than ever before – and with a new date.
The 2024 event is set to take place from August 16-18 and until now, no explanation for this move had been offered.
It had been speculated that as Coldplay had sold out four nights in Croke Park on the traditional Electric Picnic weekend at the end of August, that promoters had moved to avoid a clash.
But speaking at the 2023 Festival Press Day yesterday, Mr Benn says that this is not the case.
He said: “No it is not about that actually (Coldplay in Croke Park).
“It is something that we have been giving consideration to for quite some time actually.
“We want to see how it plays out. See how the booking of talent, the weather, etc, etc all plays out.
“It feels like the right year to do it. The response from the Electric Picnic community has been positive.
“It has been well received but we will see how it goes.”
