There is sadness in Laois this morning following the news of the passing of the Paddy Ramsbottom.
Paddy was the owner of Ramsbottom’s Pub in Stradbally for a long number of years before selling the business in recent times.
The establishment is still open in the town today and bears his name.
When Mr Ramsbottom owned it, the pub also had an adjoining shop which many in Stradbally frequently used. In addition he employed a range of people over the years.
A giant of a man, he was a very talented sportsman in his younger years, playing hurling for Ratheniska, football for Stradbally and was one of the early members and players and a hugely influential and popular member of Portlaoise Rugby Club.
‘Paddy Rams’ was a stop off point for many teams across the sporting codes of the years.
Paddy passed peacefully on Monday, August 21, surrounded by his loving family.
Predeceased by his parents Patrick and Birdie, sister Imelda and brother Joe.
Deeply regretted by his loving wife Lorraine, daughter Ciara, son Patrick, Ciara’s partner Pat, brothers Har, John and James, sisters Mairead and Ena, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, his two adoring grandsons Tom and Dan, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Mr Ramsbottom will be reposing at Rigney’s Funeral Home, Athy on Tuesday evening (August 22nd) from 6pm until the conclusion of the Rosary at 8pm.
Removal on Wednesday morning to arrive at The Church of the Sacred Heart, Stradbally for Requiem Mass at 12 noon. Burial afterwards in Ratheniska Cemetery.
No flowers please. Donations, if desired, to ‘The Friends of Naas Hospital.’ House private on Wednesday please. May he Rest in Peace.
Park-Ratheniska, paid tribute to Paddy online.
“We would like to convey or condolences to the Ramsbottom family on the passing of Paddy Ramsbottom, Athy, and formerly of Main Street, Stradbally.
“Paddy played with the club throughout his career and indeed won Junior Hurling Championships in 1958 and 1971, and an Intermediate Hurling Championship in 1961.
“Paddy was synonymous with his pub in Stradbally, and many a Park-Ratheniska match was celebrated and debated in the front bar over the years.
“Once again we wish to pass on our sympathies to the extended Ramsbottom family.
“May Paddy Rest in Peace.”
While Stradbally GAA did likewise.
They said: “Stradbally GAA and its members wish to convey their condolences and sympathy to the family of Paddy Ramsbottom, Athy and formerly of Main Street, Stradbally following his passing on Monday evening.
“Paddy played his football with Stradbally, representing the club in many games throughout his playing days, he was part of the Senior Football panels throughout the 1970’s.
“Paddy won a Senior League Final in 1974 beating Portarlington in O’ Moore Park. He also played in two Senior Semi Finals in 1974 v Emo & v Graiguecullen in 1975.
“Paddy was also a current vice president of our club. He was always a great supporter of the club.
“We wish to extend our sympathies to his wife Lorraine, daughter Ciara, son Patrick, Ciara’s partner Pat, brothers Har, John and James, sisters Mairead and Ena, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, his two grandsons Tom and Dan, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
