Electric Picnic is the most popular music festival in Ireland, with tickets selling out almost every year since its initial inception in 2004.
However, one thing we in Ireland must always consider when planning outdoor events is the weather.
And this year, that feels more prevalent than ever
July was Ireland’s wettest ever on record, accumulating 215% of the expected rainfall throughout the month for a total of 178.9mm.
Already the All Together Now festival in Co. Waterford was plagued by constant showers and mucky conditions, and Electric Picnic patrons will be hopeful of avoiding this same fate this September.
But unfortunately, it looks like the odds are not in their favour.
The research and analytics team at Casinos.com looked at the historical weather data to see what kind of rainfall falls during these exact dates over the last ten years.
Electric Picnic traders then compiled odds to signal what type of weather we can expect at Electric Picnic in 2023.
Unfortunately, the odds of Electric Picnic being completely rain free an outside bet of 7/1 (probability of 12.5%).
Just twice in the last ten years (2014 and 2021) has the festival been rain free.
However, the early Met Eireann projections for the week up until Sunday, September 3, signals that rainfall across the country could be “above average.”
There is also a chance of flash flooding around the country.
The most likely scenario is a total rainfall of 0.1-10mm across the three days, classified as sporadic light rain.
Another realistic possibility is occasional heavy showers at odds of 9/4.
This would mean anywhere from 10mm – 20mm of rainfall throughout the weekend, which last occurred in 2020.
A complete washout (20mm and up) is unlikely but not out of the realms of possibility at 8/1.
This is partially due to the prognosis of potential flash flooding, combined with the fact that 2022 was the highest ever rainfall during the festival.
A spokesperson for Casinos.com said: “Of course, we’re not weather forecasters but if history is anything to go by then we’d suggest packing your ponchos before making the trip to Laois this year.
“Even though it’s probably too early to tell, the actual experts in the field seem to think the same.
“Hopefully we’re all wrong and it will be nothing but sunshine in Stradbally for Electric Picnic this time out.”
