New road safety works have been announced at Scoil Mhuire on the Ballyroan Road in Abbeyleix, under the Safe Routes to School Programme.
These road safety works will include new footpaths, a number of speed ramps and a zebra crossing.
The project will start near the golf club in Abbeyleix and finish down past the town side of the school.
Works are expected to be finished before the start of the new school year.
Cllr John Joe Fennelly welcomed the news, saying:
“I am glad that new safety measures will start this week in Abbeyleix on the Ballyroan Road,” Cllr Fennelly said.
“A number of people had contacted me in relation to this road and I am pleased to see that these works will commence this week.
“This is a very busy road and these new measures will make the road safer, especially for families and children going to school in Scoil Mhuire primary school in Abbeyleix.”
Cllr Fennelly originally raised the issue with Laois County Council back in April of this year.
