Councillors and staff at Laois County Council paid tribute to the late John Moran at the monthly meeting held on Monday morning.
There was great shock and sadness in the first week of July at the news of Mr Moran’s passing.
The former Laois county councillor and General Election candidate was a very well-liked and well-respected figure, with numerous tributes paid at the time.
The monthly sitting of the council was paused for a 15-minute adjournment to respect and honour the memory of their former colleague.
Mr Moran was warmly remembered by his part colleagues, Fine Gael Cllrs Willie Aird and John King.
Cllr Aird said: “John was very closely associated with the Ploughing Championships, and certainly we should take this opportunity to say thank you to John for bringing the Ploughing here.
“He had a huge contribution to make as regards anti-litter. He was a very well-travelled man, and used to bring back stories about how clean the cities were in Europe compared to ours. He was very for-ward thinking
“He was a pleasure to work with; a fine colleague; and he’ll be sadly missed.”
Cllr King said: “Not alone is John a huge loss to his family, but he is a huge loss to Laois County Council.
“I served with him for ten years here and he was always very pleasant and very cheerful. But he was very serious about his business.”
Independent Cllr Ben Brennan said: “In 2009, when I first got elected, John came to me and he told me if I ever needed any help and support, he was always there for me.
“He was an honest, genuine man and great councillor. People loved him.”
The other councillors added their condolences for the late Mr Moran, before taking a few quiet moments to remember the man.
The councillors also sent their commiserations to the families and friends of other notable Laois people who have passed away recently, including Eoin and Dylan Fitzpatrick among others.
