The Power of Words Festival has just published its programme for 2023 with writing workshops, readings, conversations, book launches, open mics, music, dancing, performance poetry, story- telling, and heritage walks and talks.
The festival will be headlined by a concert from John Spillane, the recipient of this year’s Living Poets Society Award.
John is a musician, songwriter, performer, recording artist, storyteller, and poet.
Rooted in people, place and story, his music transports the listener and his live performances captivate audiences around the world.
His performances shimmer with the magic realism that permeates many of his songs as he effortlessly flits between beautiful poetry tinged with melancholy to roguish, irreverent humour.
The Power of Words Festival founder, Amanda Kelly, said: “We are delighted to honour and celebrate the work of some of our greatest poets while we are lucky enough to still have them with us.
“John is a poet of the highest calibre, who embodies the essence of poetry, magical thought and storytelling in his music.
“He reflects and connects with people in the deepest way, through his words, music and wonderful sense of humour. His words truly dance as he sings them.
Previous recipients of the award include Pat Ingoldsby, Rita Ann Higgins and Maebh McGuckian.
John will be presented with his award in the Community Gardens, Abbeyleix on Sunday afternoon, August 20.
A range of musicians, singers and readers will perform his work. All are welcome.
John will remain in Abbeyleix for the rest of the evening as he performs a sold-out show in the intimate surroundings of Preston House.
The festival takes place from August 18 to 20 in several venues throughout Abbeyleix.
Familiar names on this year’s programme include Helen Moorhouse, John MacKenna, Andrea Carter, Arthur Broomfield, Sheila Forsey, Ben Mac Caoilte, Laura Murphy and many more.
