A young boy who tragically passed away in Turkey last week has been described as “one of a kind; a portrait of contrasts.”
Mourners gathered St Peter and Paul’s Church, Portlaoise this afternoon for the requiem mass of Eoin Fitzpatrick (36) and his son Dylan (10).
There was deep shock and sadness throughout Laois and beyond last week when the tragic news broke that the father and son had died when the moped they were travelling on collided with a bus in in the Turkish tourist town of Alanya.
They had been on holiday with Dylan’s brother Cian, and Eoin’s partner, Suzanne and her children.
The mass began with several offerings being brought forward to symbolise the lives of Eoin an Dylan.
First was a hurl followed by a Portlaoise GAA jersey to represent such a big part of Eoin’s life.
This was followed by the jersey of his beloved Manchester United, and a model car, symbolising Eoin’s profession and passion for cars.
Dylan’s young life was celebrated first with the offering of a train, which Dylan adored.
Next was goggles. Dylan loved swimming and was very proud to have completed his level 4.
A picture was brought to represent Dylan’s love for art. His drawings were described as “gateway into how he saw the world.”
A book was next to symbolise Dylan’s love for reading, especially his favourite book, Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
Finally there was a huggy wuggy, because Dylan loved teddys and Dylan loved hugs.
Dylan’s mother, Claire described her son as “so special and witty – the kindest boy.”
Eoin was described as “an accomplished athlete and a devoted father.”
Mourners were told how proud Eoin was of his eldest son, Cian, who was not only Dylan’s big brother, but his best friend.
The mass was preceded by a guard of honour from Portlaoise GAA and Dylan’s classmates at Scoil Bhríde.
May they Rest in Peace.
