Laois County Council is taking a leadership role on climate action in partnership with local communities – working to reach its own climate targets while helping the wider county to do the same.
The Council proudly announces the launch of its compelling video series that showcases the council’s ongoing efforts in combating climate change and spearheading sustainable initiatives in partnership with local communities.
This video series not only highlights the council’s commitment to achieving its climate targets but also aims to inspire and engage citizens throughout the county to participate actively in climate action.
The informative video series features various projects undertaken by Laois County Council, reflecting their dedication to making a positive impact on the environment and promoting sustainability. Some of the key initiatives showcased in the series include:
Portlaoise Low Carbon Town: Under the visionary leadership of Chief Executive John Mulholland, Laois County Council leads the transformation of Portlaoise into a low carbon town, evident in its streetscape, facilities, services, and the community’s collective commitment to sustainability.
Active and Sustainable Travel: The council is dedicated to improving infrastructure for active travel, including walking routes and safe cycling and scooting options, thus encouraging climate-friendly transportation methods.
Retrofitting Council Houses: In 2022, Laois County Council retrofitted 160 of their housing stock, enhancing their livability and significantly reducing their carbon footprint through measures such as external insulation wraps, new windows and doors, and the adoption of heat pumps to replace fossil fuels.
Supporting Tidy Towns: The council is actively engaging with communities to encourage meaningful climate actions, such as the award-winning Abbeyleix Climate Action Project, which creatively involves the local community in sustainability efforts.
Stepping Stones to Sustainability: Laois Libraries have introduced a new program, “Stepping Stones to Sustainability,” promoting climate literacy and environmental awareness among the public.
Energy Efficiency Measures: Laois County Council has implemented various energy efficiency measures to reduce its environmental impact, including adopting a “Green Public Procurement” policy to source goods and services with reduced environmental footprints.
Climate Literacy Program for Schools The council sponsors a Climate Literacy program for all Transition Year students in secondary schools across the county, incorporating teacher training to encourage a more sustainable approach to education.
