Plans have been given the go-ahead to develop tourist accommodation at a location on Main Street in Portlaoise.
The development is for a vacant shop front building which is listed on the Record of Protected Structures – the former Adams Chemist, at Number 58, Main Street.
Haler Lea Associates Ltd sought planning permission from Laois County Council at the end of May with permission being granted earlier this week.
The company previously converted the property into apartments which they say they have unsuccessfully attempted to lease to Laois County Council.
This new development is to convert the current apartments into “tourism accommodation.”
This is to include tourist short term letting, corporate letting and all associated site works.
In their application, Haler Lea Associates Ltd said: “Following the closure of O’Loughin’s Hotel at Main Street, there is a shortfall in the market” for such an amenity.
Haler Lea Associates Ltd is a holding company registered in Dublin 2.
Their largest shareholder is Beechfield Healthcare Limited, registered in Clonminam Business Park,
Portlaoise.
