The Consumers’ Association of Ireland has warned that insurance premiums have jumped by almost 22% in the last year. A remarkable figure.
Many homeowners in the Midlands region have been shocked by these excessive increases recently, particularly in home insurance costs.
This is an issue that Sinn Féin Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD raised directly with the representative body of the industry, Insurance Ireland, in recent weeks.
This is happening at a time when households are already under huge pressure from the cost of living crisis.
Mortgage interest rates, childcare costs, grocery bills and more are mounting up as families find themselves under tremendous pressure.
Sinn Féin TD for South Kildare, Patricia Ryan has said that “rip-off increases” to home insurance must end.
“I welcome the intervention by the Consumers’ Association of Ireland and share their concerns.
“The Minister must intervene directly with the sector to ensure that costs come down without delay.
“Government must act to ensure that workers and families get a break from the cost of living crisis urgently.”
