The death has occurred of former Laois county councillor, Cathaoirleach and General Election candidate John Moran.
Mr Moran, who was a Fine Gael councillor in Laois from 1991 to 2019, passed away in hospital in Dublin earlier today. He was aged 74.
From Killeen, John was a hugely popular member of the council for almost 30 years. He was also a General Election candidate in 2011 alongside long-time Fine Gael TD Charlie Flanagan when he got over 4,000 first preference votes.
After Moran was first elected in 1991, he topped the poll in Luggacurran in 1999 and 2004 before finishing second in 2009 and was also comfortably elected in the new Graiguecullen-Portarlington district in 2014.
John was Cathaoirleach of Laois County Council in 2008. Away from politics, John ran a successful tour and travel business for many years and was also highly involved with the National Ploughing Association.
John is predeceased by his wife Loretta, who only died last July. He is mourned by his sons Robert and Marc and daughters Caragh, Georgina and Aisling, who succeeded John in Laois County Council when she was elected following his retirement in 2019.
On his retirement from the council in 2019, he was praised as a ‘gentleman’, ‘a lovable rogue’ and for his general kindness, something which served him well as a public representative.
John is deeply regretted by his loving children Aisling, Caragh, Georgina, Robert and Marc, brothers Billy, Michael and Larry, sisters Breda, Marian, Patricia, Noeleen, Collette and Eithne, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, grandchildren , great-grandchild, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral arrangements to follow.
