“These cycle lanes promote safe cycling as a healthy lifestyle choice in both communities”

A local councillor has called on Laois County Council to improve safety measures on the Durrow to Abbeyleix road.

Cllr Ollie Clooney was speaking at the Borris-in-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal District Committee meeting this week.

The Independent Cllr called for Laois County Council to enhance and upgrade the existing cycle lanes on the N77 between Durrow and Abbeyleix to comply with safe cycling practice.

“The cycle lanes enhance connectivity between these two Laois towns and promote tourism and business in this area,” Cllr Clooney said.

“Also, these cycle lanes promote safe cycling as a healthy lifestyle choice in both communities.”

Mr. James Dowling, Senior Executive Engineer, Roads said:

“The road design office will seek funding from TII for funding the upgrade of the existing cycle lane.”

Cllr Clooney also called on the Council to erect a ‘dangerous junction’ sign on the Derry Road junction in Durrow.

“There is very poor visibility,” he said, “which is a massive hazard to road users.”

Mr. Dowling said the road design office will seek an location for the appropriate placement of additional warning signage at the junction.
