Three Laois County Councillors come together to fight for Mountrath housing estate

Three Laois County Councillors have come together to fight for Fr O’Connor Crescent in Mountrath.

Independent Cllrs James Kelly and Ollie Clooney along with Fine Gael Cllr, Conor Bergin took the stand at the Borris-in-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal District Committee meeting this week.

The councillors presented a united front in asking that Laois County Council carry out a number of works in the estate, specifically the installation of “traffic calming measures” at various areas.

The councilors asked that the Council address footpath issues, and to widen parts the road to allow vehicles to pass freely.

Finally, there was a request to install a new public light; address surface water issues; and install a new bin.

Mr Edmond Kenny, District Engineer, who had a lot of ground to cover, first confirmed that a traffic calming solution at the entrance to Fr O’Connor Crescent had been completed earlier this week.

Mr Kenny said Laois County Council will review the current safety provisions in the estate and will arrange upgrade works for to be implemented as deemed necessary.

Addressing the other matters, Mr Kenny said the request for infill lights will be referred to the public lighting department of Laois County Council.

A meeting will be arranged with councillors in the estate to review the drainage issues and the request for a new bin.

The councillors welcomed the news but reiterated the importance of maintaining the estate built in the 1960’s.

Councillors commended the residents, who they say have been extremely committed to the continued maintenance of the area.
