A local County Councillor has sought to improve conditions for pedestrians in both Rathdowney and Errill.
Cllr John King was speaking at the Borris-in-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal District Committee meeting this week.
The Fine Gael Cllr asked that the Council seek a layout adjustment to the junction at O’Malleys Pub, The Square, Rathdowney to facilitate improved pedestrian movement in the area.
Mr Edmond Kenny, District Engineer said: “Adjustments to the road layout are required at this location which will include the installation of kerbs to segregate pedestrians from traffic lanes.
“The project will also take in the widening of footpaths on both sides of the road and the installation of a Give/Way system at the junction.
“An application for funding will be made to the National Transport Authority for these improvements.
Cllr King also called on the Council to allocate funding for the provision of street furniture for Rathdowney town square, saying “all of the existing seating is in very poor repair.”
Ms Denise Rainey, Town Regeneration Officer said: “A Town Centre First Plan is currently being prepared for Rathdowney.
“Funding has been secured for the upgrade of street furniture in the town which is in line with the objectives contained in the plan.”
Addressing Errill, Cllr King called on the Council to seek funding to install new footpath from St Kieran’s Park to Errill village following the construction of 14 new homes in addition to the existing homes in the area.
“This will provide safety for pedestrians shopping in the village,” the Cllr said.
Mr Edmond Kenny, District Engineer said: “An application will be made to the National Transport Authority for aimed at funding primarily and providing safe, accessible convenient pedestrian facilities that will link the housing estate to the village.”
Cllr King welcomed the responses from Council staff and said: “Good money spent will pay dividends in the future.”
