A new Cathaoirleach has been elected to lead the Borris-in-Ossary-Mountmellick Municipal District Committee at their AGM today.
Fine Gael Cllr, John King was elected unopposed and succeeds the outgoing chair, Fianna Fáil Cllr, Paddy Bracken.
Cllr King was nominated for the position by fellow Fine Gael Cllr, Conor Bergin and seconded by Fianna Fáil Cllr, Seamus McDonald.
Cllr King has been a councilor for 14 years, in which time he has previousely served as Cathaoirleach of both Laois County Council and the Borris-in-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal District Committee.
Upon his election, Cllr King said: “I would first like to say thanks to my proposer and seconder; I hope to continue doing the work as Chairman.
“I look forward to working with all the councilors and I will do my best to work with them.
“It will be a busy year for all of us looking ahead, beacause we have the local elections coming up in June of 2024.
The new Cathaoirleach’s first act was to nominate Cllr Bergin, who will take up the position of Leas-Cathaoirleach.
Outgoing Chair, Paddy Bracken thanked his fellow councilors, council staff, and the media for their support and hard work during his term.
Cllr Clooney led the room in celebrating and thanking Cllr Bracken, saying he brought great leadership and experience to the chair.
His sentiments were echoed by all other Councilors as well as council staff.
