A local councilor has called on Laois County Council to install traffic calming measures on the L-6136-0 Knocknagroagh / Rathnamanagh Road.
Cllr Willie Aird was speaking at the Portlaoise Municipal District Committee meeting last week, where he prioritised the matter of road safety.
Cllr Aird described the area in question as a very dangerous stretch of road, where “a number of accidents have occurred recently.”
Mr Wes Wilkinson, Senior Executive Engineer said: “The Portlaoise Municipal District Office will make arrangements to install slow road markings at the required locations on the L-6136-0 at Knocknagroagh / Rathnamanagh.
“This location will be included as an application for Safety Improvement Works funding for 2024.”
Keeping road safety on the agenda, Cllr Aird called on Laois County Council to install a staggered pedestrian guard railing in the footpath in front of the pedestrian crossing at McSorley’s Filling Station.
Mr Wilkinson confirmed that the Portlaoise MD Office will make arrangements to install a railings at the location.
Cllr Aird also called on the Council to re-mark the road at the roundabouts on the Link Road from the Abbeyleix Road to the Strabally Road.
“The Portlaoise MD Office will make arrangements to carry out road marking works on the Portlaoise Southern Circular from the junction with the N77 Abbeyleix Road to the junction of the N80,” Mr Wilkinson said.
Cllr Aird welcomed the responses and suggested the projects be completed in a time-efficient manner.
