Rathdowney Golf Club was a hive of activity recently as the local GAA Club held their 8th Annual “Rathdowney Pharmacy” sponsored Golf Classic.
Rathdowney Golf Club gave a warm welcome and presented course in excellent condition, providing great variety and a serious challenge to all participants.
“Being one of our principal fundraising activities we were delighted to see in excess of 45 teams battle for honours, some travelling from as far away as Waterford, Dublin, Kerry, Limerick and Galway,” organisers said.
“By any definition, the event was a resounding success with the quality of the golf matching the weather conditions.
“As the scores were totted up and double checked in the clubhouse afterwards, a team, representing MW Hire, comprising Mattie Walsh, J J Tobin, Joe Costello and Davy Ryan triumphed in Category 1, closely followed by Dave and Martin Dalton, Liam Doyle and Tomas Hickey.
“Taking home, the bronze medal were Jim Kells, Paud O’ Reilly, Liam Holland and Jim Delaney. The Williams family from Erin’s Isle, Dublin (Timmy’s cousins) were a match for all comers in Category 2, while in Category 3 Dave McKelvey, Adrian Hickey, Lorcan Dunne and Mark Loughlin claimed the spoils.
“Joyce Bolger with a stunning drive down the 14th took home the Ladies Longest Drive.
“Other prizes were hotly contested with Joe Costello clinching the Nearest to the Pin prize and Sean Guerins (Templemore) winning the Men’s Long Drive. We also had a number of Juvenile teams, some showing a natural talent for the game, with the winning prize going to Oisin Barry, Philip Tynan, Peter Meagher and CVian Hanrahan.
“In conjunction with the Classic a raffle took place in which the star prize was for an Aer Lingus travel Voucher valued at 500€. The lucky winner was Mick Delaney, Graigueavalla
“A special thanks to Lorcan Dunne, Kevin Percy and the greenstaff for ensuring the course was in such fine condition. Also, a big thank you to Lisa and Rathdowney Golf Club who couldn’t have been more helpful.”
Commenting on the event Club Chairperson, Michael Cleere, expressed the Club’s gratitude to our Main Sponsor Howard and Caroline Coburn “Rathdowney Pharmacy” and all the other companies and individuals including Dunnes Stores, Dowling’s Bar Errill, Ray’s Bar Errill, Keane’s Service Station, Glanbia, Arabawn, The Willow Tree, Dowling Design Glass and Dawn Meats for making the event such a wonderful occasion.
