In a heartwarming display of compassion and community spirit, a group of Laois school children embarked on a remarkable journey to raise funds for the local Jigsaw charity.
The children, from Ratheniska National School, raised €640 for a charity dedicated to supporting young people with mental health issues.
Their noble efforts were led by their school-bus driver, Rassie Erasmus, who not only guides the children safely to school but also serves as a minister of religion in the Irish Reformed Church
Mr. Erasmus, recognising the challenges faced by the children on a daily basis, had observed their struggles with, peer pressure, societal expectations, self-worth, acceptance and various other emotional battles.
When the opportunity arose, initiated by one of the parents, Mr. Erasmus wasted no time in reaching out to the school-bus family. To his delight, they responded with unwavering support and enthusiasm, eager to contribute to the noble cause.
The broader community, including Rev. Erasmus’ Church congregation, rallied together, realizing the significance of the initiative and the positive impact it could have on the lives of their young ones.
Under the guidance of their driver and with the wholehearted involvement of their parents, the children not only through their parents support but contributed from their own pockets.
As the final tally was counted, the school children and their community were overwhelmed by the astounding amount of €640 raised.
The funds collected were presented to Jigsaw, a local charity that offers vital mental health services, including counseling, workshops, and support groups, specifically tailored to young individuals.
Organisations like Jigsaw play a crucial role in supporting young people facing mental health challenges. Jigsaw’s dedication to providing accessible resources, counseling, and support tailored to the unique needs of young individuals is invaluable.
The fundraiser became a symbol of hope, breaking down the barriers surrounding mental health and emphasising the importance of early intervention and accessible resources for young people.
“The fundraising efforts of the Ratheniska National School children highlight the significance of supporting such organisations,” Mr Erasmus said.
“By channeling their energy and enthusiasm into raising funds for Jigsaw, they are ensuring that essential mental health services remain available to their peers and future generations.
“The awareness they generate around mental health helps to break down the barriers and stigma that often surround these issues, fostering an environment of empathy and understanding.
“Furthermore, the act of reaching out to others and actively engaging in helping those in need can be incredibly beneficial for one’s own mental health.
“When we extend a helping hand, we not only support others but also cultivate a sense of purpose, connection, and fulfillment within ourselves.
“Reaching out and offering support can provide a fresh perspective, allowing us to gain insight into our own challenges, foster resilience, and strengthen our own emotional well-being.
“By organising the fundraiser, the children exemplify the transformative power of reaching out to others. They demonstrate that by working together as a community to support a cause greater than themselves, they not only contribute to the betterment of society but also enhance their own mental well-being.
“In a world that often emphasizes individualism and self-focus, the actions of these young heroes from rural Ireland serve as a reminder that human connection, empathy, and support are vital components of a healthy and fulfilling life.
“By actively engaging in initiatives that promote mental health and by being there for one another, we can create a more compassionate and supportive society where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.
“The children, along with their parents, community members, and the wider Church congregation, stand as a shining example of the power of unity, compassion, and the unwavering spirit that binds rural Ireland.
“They have undoubtedly become the true heroes of their community, spreading hope and support to those who need it most.”
