Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald has been elected as the new Cathaoirleach of the Portlaoise Municipal District Committee.
The vote took place at this week’s Committee AGM, with Cllr Fitzgerald elected unopposed.
Fianna Fáil party colleague, Cllr John Joe Fennelly nominated Cllr Fitzgerald, which was seconded by Cllr Willie Aird.
The new Cathaoirleach said the position “Comes with huge responsibility as the decisions made in this chamber affect generations.”
Cllr Fitzgerald thanked Cllrs Fennelly and Aird for their nomination and second and went to thank the local community, local businesses, voluntary groups, politicians and the executive.
“All these groups work together to do the very best we can for the people of the area,” the new chair concluded.
On the nomination of Cllr Thomasina Connell, Cllr Aird was elected to the position of Leas-Cathaoirleach, also unopposed.
Outgoing Cathaoirleach, Cllr Barry Walsh said: “I’d like to thank everyone for your support throughout the year.
“It has been easy enough to run the meetings with you all; and thanks for all your advice as well.”
Cllr John Joe Fennelly was first to congratulate Cllr Walsh on a job well done – a feeling that was reciprocated by each of the other Cllrs.
