The second year of the John Duggan Memorial Cup is set to get underway in The Heath on Friday next, June 30.
John Duggan sadly passed away in April 2021 and the first competition held in his memory took place last year.
John was widely known in teaching and sporting circles and was heavily involved in the school’s GAA teams over the years as well as with the Portlaoise GAA club, whom he played and coached with.
In 2004 he guided Portlaoise CBS to the All Ireland Colleges ‘B’ football final which they narrowly lost to St Louis of Kilkeel from Down.
John was also involved with the Portlaoise senior hurlers in recent years, working alongside Teddy Fennelly when the club reached the Leinster intermediate final in 2018.
As well as that he was a keen golfer and in 2017 helped a team of Portlaoise CBS and Portlaoise College staff to win the inaugural All Ireland Teachers Golf Championship.
There were two outings last year – one in The Heath which was won by Frank Sheehan and the second by Bill Davis in Mountrath.
Over 160 golfers played in the two events last year and organiser Kevin Sheehan is hoping for a similar turn out this year.
He said: “There will be Gross, Veteran, Front 9, Back 9 and category prizes along with of course the winner getting their name on the prestigious cup in honour of John Duggan.
“All golfers are eligible to play and 20€ is the entry fee with a twos club and light refreshments beforehand included.
“I want thank our sponsors from the last event: Shaun Tobin Plastering, Michael Reynolds in Leinster GAA, CK Auto Detailing, Kevin Holland at Druids, DeBruns and Downey’s Auto Stop.”
Anyone interested in playing can WhatsApp Kevin on 086-1649066 in order to book a slot on the timesheet.
