Four Laois athletes made the trip to Belfast on Saturday to take part in the Belfast Irish Milers Club Meet held in Mary Peter’s Track.
On a scorching day in Belfast, there were fine performances all round with Cian Kelly of St Abban’s winning his 1500m B race in a new PB of 3:51.
Cian was to the fore throughout the race and came home strongly to take the victory.
In the Women’s 3000m, St Abban’s Cheryl Nolan claimed the victory in 9:25. Cheryl also showed her strength in the closing stages to take the win.
Her clubmate Niall Harvey ran a steady race in the D 1500 to finish in 4:16. However, the result of the day was that of Jack Fenlon.
The St Abban’s youngster sat off the early pace in the men’s 3000m where Olympic semi-finalist Andrew Coscoran went out very aggressively.
Jack was in a group of four athletes until the closing stages where he managed to pick each one of these off.
His fast finish stopped the clock at 8:19 just inside the European U-20 standard of 8:20. The championships will be held in Jerusalem from August 7-10.
Similar to last year, this time by no means guarantees Jack a place at the Championships as there is a number of other athletes capable of achieving this standard.
However, it puts him in a great position as the racing heats up over the summer.
