A quite simply awful situation has been allowed to unfold at the back of three Laois housing estates.
A meeting in Laois has heard how the area has been blighted by disgusting dumping with those engaging in the act also setting items on fire.
The issue was brought up by Independent Councillor James Kelly at a recent meeting of the Borris-In-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal District.
According to Cllr Kelly, who also provided pictorial evidence, the dumping is taking place at the land at the rear of St Fintan’s Terrace/Fr O’Connor Crescent and Rushall Housing Estates in Mountrath.
He explained: “As the pictures show, couches, beds, mattresses and even children’s cars have been dumped here.
“Some of those who dumped these items, also decided to set fire to them with couches among these.
“I want to thank Simon Walton and Dominic Reddin for helping to clean this site up but the problem is that these people will return.
“It is a disgrace and a continual problem. It is disrespectful and a criminal offence.
“People are driving in here and then dumping so we need to fence the area off to stop this.
“It is shocking to think that we have to fence a green area off but I can’t see any other solution.”
Cllr Ollie Clooney and Cllr John King said that the ‘red tape’ preventing cameras from recording these people who engage in this activity from being persecuted needs to be removed.
In response, Trevor Hennessy from the Housing Section of Laois County Council said they would liaise with the Environment enforcement Section regarding the issue.
